News on Knees

On Monday I had an MRI scan of my right hip. It seemed to have gone fine, apart from the fact that they skipped some scans, because the radiologist thought this was only a checkup, and nothing serious. He probably concluded this based on the form written by the orthopaedic surgeon in May, when everything still seeemed stable. Before I realized this, I was already out; however, I wasn’t too sad about it, because on the same form, the surgeon had also ordered some X-rays. So, that compensated for the fewer MRI scans.

The MRI scan of my right knee had originally been scheduled for 25th August, but this morning, the MRI assistant called me to say I could come this afternoon, since two other patients had canceled their appointments. Yay…! So I went there this afternoon, on my Weekly Wednesday Afternoon off.

Schuifregelaars, voortgangsbalken en kringvelden.

Any idea what these are, you speakers of Dutch? If not, it’s okay. I didn’t either, until I borrowed the Dutch version of this book on Visual C++, with the above words as the chapter title.

They are the translations for scroll bars, progress bars, and spin buttons…

Yes yes, I can see you shaking your head, Linux fans, I have to use Visual C++ in this new job…

All-in-One

Got a new toy, an HP All-In-One (PSC 2110), i.e. printer, scanner, and copier. Especially the last function is very handy, so I don’t have to go to my local supermarket only to find that the broken copier still hasn’t been fixed…

Good and bad knees/news

The good news is that that my knee which has been bothering me since my holiday to Athens looks fine! That’s what the orthopaedic surgeon told me after taking a look at the X-ray of my knee which was taken last week.

The bad (or uncertain) news is that the problem with my hip seems to have worsened, and that that hip is causing the pain in my knee. To be sure, he ordered an MRI scan of my knee, in addition to the scan of my hip which had already been ordered for 28 July. Hopefully the knee scan can be scheduled soon…

On-line Medical Dictionaries

The Word of the Day is: Kernspinresonanztomographie, or MRI / NMR as it is more commonly known.

Nevertheless, if you know German, Roche Lexikon Medizin is a nice on-line medical dictionary. Sometimes German descriptions are clearer than English ones, because they use less Latin terms (but sometimes they aren’t, likein the above example).

Some nice medical dictionaries are:
- MMG online
- UK Online Medical Dictionary
- Stedman’s Medical Dictionary, although this one seems to contain some entries without descriptions (e.g. try looking up ’stent’)
