C++ bookses

Rather than just passively watch movies, which although very entertaining, isn’t very useful, I can read in one of the three books I ordered from Amazon last weekend, which were delivered today.

  • B. Stroustrup: “The C++ Programming Language”, THE book on C++
  • J. Prosise: “Programming Windows MFC”, a good book on MFC
  • M. Williams: “Teach yourself Visual C++ in 24 hours”, just to have the “version originale” of the Dutch book I borrowed a few months ago.

Well, only two of them actually arrived today. WHERE IS THE THIRD ONE? And where is the delivery slip, with the phone number to call Amazon when things go wrong? And why is there no phone number on the Amazon help pages???

Star Trek Enterprise

As the nights are rapidly getting longer, this time of year, I’m pleased that a colleague of mine lent me the first 5 episodes on VCD of Star Trek Enterprise. The first season is currently being broadcast by the Veronica TV station here in Holland, but I missed some (parts of the) first episodes, so it’ll be nice to catch up, to know how “it all started”.

I was quite impressed by the first 2 episodes I saw, because of the Vulcan and Klingon languages in it. And, I admit it, also because of the linguist :-)
Her name “Hoshi Sato” in the series sounds a lot more exotic than her real name Linda Park. But then, Park is a common last name in Korea. According to a website I can’t remember, Hoshi is supposed to mean “star” in Japanese, so there you go…

Look ma, no wires!

Just a very quick note, to try my new Wifi access point and card.

I just couldn’t resist this special offer at WiFiShop.nl, which consists of a 3Com 54 Mbit Access Point + a free PC-Card, for just EUR 99 (+ tax + shipping). Which is still cheaper than most of the EUR 150+ for most budget brand access points, like Belkin, Sitecom and Sweex. Where you still have to buy the PC-Card separately. I guess this makes up for my overpriced Trust router I wrote about a few weeks ago…

So now I can surf the net downstairs, in the attic, in the garden (a bit cold for that now…), etc. Woohoo!

Van Zweden & Vladar @ DAPZ

Went to a concert at the Dr Anton-Philips Zaal in Den Haag.

The Residentie-orkest was led by Jaap van Zweden, and before the interval Stefan Vladar played Mozart’s well-known 21st piano concerto, sometimes nicknamed “Elvira Madigan”, after the Swedish movie from 1967.

After the interval, Jaap van Zweden and the orchestra performed Mahler’s first symphony, “Der Titan”

Re-Reloaded

Couldn’t resist to Reload Before the Revolution Begins. Oh, well; had to do something anyway with the Airmiles my Mom has been saving for years, so I got this double DVD.

Actually, we also saw The Matrix Reloaded in the Cinema using airmiles, and now I could get a EUR 11,11 discount at Albert Heijn so it only cost EUR 18,88. Not bad for two discs, one of which contains bonus materials, like interviews, the-making-of, etc.
