Hospital Stay

Today, just 4 days after the operation, I was discharged from the hospital.
Below is a brief roundup of what happened each day:

BHR

About the title: BHR stands for Birmingham Hip Resurfacing, which is the ideal method for treating hip problems in young patients. Unfortunately they don’t do this type of operations in Holland.

So, yesterday I was admitted to the Jan Palfijn hospital in Gent (Belgium) to have a BHR operation. This should hopefully solve the problems I’ve been having with my right hip for almost two years. The regular pre-op examinations were done: blood samples, ECG, X-rays, talk to a cardiologist.

Isn’t this a wonderful program?

Folke Nauta @ De Veste

At a time when other people are either still slowly waking up, or attending a church mass, I went to a concert today, in Theater De Veste in beautiful sunny Delft. Due to construction works, the theater was a bit hidden, as you can see in the picture.

But, for those who could find their way to the theater, a nice sunday morning recital was given by Folke Nauta, a well-known young (30) Dutch pianist, who played impromptus by Schubert (D.899) and Chopin (all four). While I’ve played all of the Schubert pieces, and one by Chopin, when I was in high-school and in university, it was nice to hear them performed as they ought to be, by a professional.

Afterwards, we had lunch in a wok buffet restaurant, which was small but nice. The only drawback was that it wasn’t an all-you-can-eat buffet, at least not for lunch. But hey, what do you expect for less than a tenner?

Entrapment and Lara Cr(ap/oft)

Gee, my boss was right when he warned me 3 years ago what a crappy movie Tomb Raider (Lara Croft) is. I’m glad I didn’t buy it, just rented it from the video rental store.

Compared to that, Entrapment, which I did buy (at Blokker for just EUR 9.99) was worth 10 Oscars.

Kruidvat shopping spree

After my disappointing experience at Kruidvat Delft, today I tried my luck at Kruidvat Leidsenhage. To my pleasant surprise they had more there, including some things that had already been on the shelves for 2 or 3 years.
I literally got everything they had which was just a *bit* interesting, thinking: “If I don’t get it now, it will be gone forever”. So I left the store with 8 boxes, containing a grand total of 30 (three oh) CDs. This “set me back” EUR 50.03, which is still only 1.66 per CD, unbelievably cheap! Especially for that quality! (almost everything DDD, and relatively famous artists)

Kruidvat krisis

Went to Kruidvat in Delft, to look for great value CDs, but the CD shelves there aren’t what they used to be. Almost as empty as they were in Voorschoten last month, but I thought that was because Voorschoten is such a small village.

So, “in arren moede” (since there was nothing else) I just got a box with Bach’s St. Matthew’s Passion, since it’s that time of year anyway. For 5,59 Euros, even this Bach hater doesn’t mind having a copy of this music.

Bossche Bollen

Went to Den Bosch today to the Jeroen Bosch Ziekenhuis. As hospitals go, this is a nice one: nice building, nice doctors, and a nice “coffee corner” with a very impressive menu. I guess the “Southern Mentality” really shows here: a “bourgondisch” way of life, where enjoying life (e.g. food) is not considered a sin (Catholic vs. Calvinist mentality).
The only problem with this hospital is that the orthopaedic secretary is almost impossible to reach by phone…

Afterwards, we had a brief walk around the city center, including of course the Sint Jan cathedral, which happened to be colder inside than outside :-) I also took some pictures, and before returning home, we brought some Bossche Bollen (see picture above) from Jan de Groot’s (apparently famous) bakery
