Over the Hedge

Went to see Over the Hedge, in the renovated Pathe Tuschinski cinema. The renovation wasn’t THAT recent, but I hadn’t been in there in ages (8 years?), so for me it was still new. Although our movie wasn’t shown in the Grand Hall, we got a sneak peek there before we left. The ceiling with cycling colors is quite nice.

Click here for pictures, they don’t allow deep linking. Sheesh

If you haven’t seen it: go see it, it’s really worth it. Funnier than Madagascar I think, and not with those cross-eyed characters.
The main character (Verne, the tortoise) is almost as funny as Shrek. Maybe because he’s just as green ;-)
And the graphics are awesome. Absolutely the best fur I’ve ever seen!
I didn’t recognize William Shatner’s voice though (one of the opossums?), probably because he doesn’t get to say “Beam me up, Scotty” in this movie…

HHGTTG

Anyone reading this seen the HHGTTG movie? What did you think of it?
And how many volumes of the HHGTTG books does it cover?
Benjamin, I’m sure you can answer these…

I wanna go and see it, but I’d want to read the book(s) first.
If it’s not all five / six of them

Buongiorno, notte

Just came home from Filmhuis Lumen, where we saw Buongiorno, notte, a movie about the kidnapping in 1978 of politician Aldo Moro by the communist Red Brigades movement. Quite impressive and touching, to see that (some of) the kidnappers were humans too, and struggled with their victim and the authorities.

War of the Worlds

Saw War of the Worlds at the cinema this Saturday. Although the end was a bit surprising, and a bit quick, but all in all, it was quite an enjoyable movie. The (less than) two hours flew by. Great special effects, some psychological issues raised, although not developed very deeply. Best acting was (IMHO) by 11-year old Dakota Fanning, who plays Tom Cruise’s daughter.

The ending was a bit too happy to my taste, but then, it is a Hollywood movie… I don’t regret having seen it.

Sidetracked

Has anyone ever seen a movie based on a book, which was NOT a disappointment?

I just finished the DVD of Villospår (Sidetracked), based on Henning Mankell’s book, but was disappointed especially by the ending, which they changed dramatically. OK, I can imagine that they shortened the story a bit, by leaving out 1 of the 4 murders performed by a serial killer. Even so, the movie is still 2.5 hours long. But to dramatically change the ending? And not for the better. Also, since you already know what’s going to happen, a lot of the suspense is gone, so for crime novels it’s especially awkward. Oh well…

Wallace & Gromit from BOL

Received my first order ever from bol.com today, a DVD with 3 short hilarious animation movies of Wallace and Gromit, the fantastic animated clay figures by the British Aardman Animations. These are the predecessors to the full-length feature film “Chicken Run”, which you may have seen.

Ordering from bol.com also turned out to be a breeze. And if you live in Holland, and order from the Dutch site: you don’t have to pay in advance or use a credit card, but you can wait for the order to arrive with an “acceptgiro”… Secure and convenient!

IFFR pt. 2 & 3

A week late (but better late than never, right?) parts 2 and 3 of the Rotterdam Film Festival:
On Wednesday I saw Electric Shadows, a Chinese emotional story about a family of movie fans. The Chinese friend I was with, said she recognized a lot of the Chinese “cruelty against daughters”.

On Saturday I saw Chasing the Sun, and Indonesian movie about four close friends who grow up and lose their naive belief in friendship / love / fidelity etc. Really not a bad movie for people who never had any formal education in acting, although some scenes really resembled soap operas too much. Still, it was nice to have seen it, and recognize a lot of aspects from Indonesian culture.
